Day 109 – Cupcakes For The People

Today is Darwin’s 2nd Birthday!  I am still amazed that it has gone so fast.  Before he came…it seemed like it would take forever for him to get here.  Now I can’t find a way to slow down time and enjoy all the great moments.  Everyday I feel like I miss so much.  I have been working a lot at Trader Joe’s and in my studio.  I have been sad all week….I miss him.  Today we are having a small get together with a few friends at the Noe Valley Rec. Center playground.  Theresa made a bunch of cupcakes and I decorated them.  At the party, a bunch of Darwin’s homefries show up.  He smiles and plays with them all.  His cousins Ava and Ella, made it just in time for the party, they are up from LA.  It is pretty great.  It is also very informal.  If people would liek a cupcake I encourage them to just have one.  No waiting for the Birthday song or anything.  We do light a candle on one and get Darwin to blow it out.  There are still a lot of cupcakes left.  A couple little girls are eyeballing them.  So I offer a few to them.  Then I start going around the playground and offering the rest of the cupcakes to many of the other parents and kids.  I get rid of almost all of them.  Making quite a few of them happier.  None of them are as happy as I am that I am Darwin’s dad.  Happy Birthday Buddy!

This is a painting of Darwin out on our sidewalk.  He is pretty awesome.  This is basically a quick skecth of a painting I would like to make.  The one in my head is more detailed.  You would actually be able to tell that it is Darwin.  Well I am worn out.  Off to bed.  Take care.  Good night.

Sounds like a marvelous celebration for a 2-year old’s birthday…..and way to go for figuring out how to gift all the leftover cupcakes!
As the mother of two sons (now 25 and 30-what!), my most wistful yearnings are to once again feel the magic of them when they were Darwin’s age. From what I can tell, you are already very present and attentive to soaking up the moments of his life as they unfold; from my perspective, that’s the most important thing for all of you right now.
