Day 44 – Fat People Unite!

“Fat people know what it takes to lose weight.”  I tell a customer in my store.  We have been talking about losing weight for about 10 minutes.  It all started when she had asked me about the calorie counts on our newest whole wheat crumpets.  She is currently working on losing some weight.  Me TOO!  In fact, at any given time 45-51% of Americans claim that they are dieting.  I believe fat people truly ‘know how’ to lose weight….I know it sounds funny but the truth is many of us have lost a lot of pounds, a few times,  over an over again.  We may gain it back….and lose it a few more times.  It is not as though we are ill informed.  We probably read food labels more often than skinny folks.  We buy lots of literature about good fats, bad fats, good food, junk food, exercise routines, and nutritional solutions to our problem.  According to Smart in 2007 we spent 58 BILLION dollars on weight loss pills, videos, books, and equipment….That doesn’t even total in the health food or gym memberships.    Most of the time we are willing to try just about anything to lose weight.  We are taught to believe in flat out lies about our fatness and our struggle to lose it….Things like:

  1. It’s all a matter of determination, you must not have any willpower or else you would be skinny.
  2. It’s all the carbs!  You can replace carbs with any of the food bad guys….sugar, sweeteners, high fructose, trans fats, hydrogenated, dairy, eggs, oils, fat..etc.
  3. You could eat anything you want and still lose weight….here just look at my before and after picture!  This tactic is easily one of the most overused and misleading of them all.
  4. You can lose 30 pounds in 30 days!  This is actually scientifically impossible.  And incredibly dangerous.

This list could go on.  However….that is probably on another blog somewhere.  I am still talking with Stephanie about our weight loss journeys.  I encourage her to find some exercise that she really likes doing and do it a lot.  We talk about food and how you need to do as well as you can, but if you slip up, you can get right back on track at the next meal.  Don’t blow off your whole plan just for one mistake.  I also tell her that I have lost about 80 pounds in 2 years.  I did it slowly…that way if I end up eating like a ravenous wolf for a whole week the scale slowly goes up…and I can correct things.  Where as when you lose weight fast it seems like it will come back super fast, and you can even gain more than where you started!

I encourage Stephanie, and tell her that I am sure she can do it.  Which probably sounds weird coming from stranger…But we have a great conversation and we both feel more empowered to take on our challenges.  Gift given and automatically received!  It is great because I was having kind of a rough food day too.  So getting back on track was way easier.

This painting is simple….It is about my health.  Your health.  If you don’t have your health then what do you have…..?  Nothing really.  There are times in your life where you have to be honest with yourself….and decide to make your life a priority.  I have done it several hundred times.  Sometimes it lasts longer than others….But I think it is just important to keep doing it.  Keep focus on your health.  huh… tips from a recently diagnosed diabetic….sorry.  Take care of yourself.

Powerful painting-powerful post. You gave good recommendations, encouragement, and support to your friend-I think it always helps to have a partner or someone to be accountable to for weight loss. Choosing foods wisely and finding some activity you like and are likely to keep up are crucial; facing the reality that there is no miracle diet plan and figuring out how to live and eat more responsibly is key.
These few things that have helped me along the way:
    1. Most people eat/overeat for reasons that have nothing to do with actual physical hunger-if you care, figure out what that is and deal with it in another manner.
    2. Hunger does not nearly equate to starvation-sometimes it’s as simple as being dehydrated, sometimes you can think of a healthy snack that will tide you over until mealtime, sometimes you just have to get busy doing something engaging instead of reaching for the food. Realizing that I could feel true hunger and survive for quite a few hours beyond that was quite illuminating to me.
    3. Plan ahead for healthy things to eat between meals so that you don’t typically get to being ravenous.
    4. Eat your meals very slowly, with no distractions of TV, reading, etc-take the time to really taste and savor what you are eating.
Love and best wishes to you as you find your way……
